Alkaline Earth Metals

Alkaline earth metals are metals that are summarized in the group of alkali metals in the periodic table of elements. They are calcium and magnesium. Related to water, these metals are often present in natural springs and can make water harder. When present in large quantities, the water can cause scale build-up in plumbing, water heaters, and household appliances. The degree of water hardness is usually measured as millimoles of calcium carbonate per liter (mmol/l) and indicates how much calcium and magnesium ions are in the water. Hard water typically contains higher concentrations of calcium and magnesium ions than soft water.
