The water hardness in Germany varies depending on the region. In some areas the water is soft while in other areas it is hard. The water hardness is measured in degrees of German hardness (dH) and indicates how many millimoles of calcium carbonate are contained in each liter of water. A water hardness of 0-7 dH is considered soft water, while a water hardness of over 14 dH is considered hard water. In Germany, the regions in the south and east of the country are particularly affected by hard water. In these regions, the water can have a water hardness of over 20 dH. This is due to the high proportion of limestone in the rocks in these regions. In regions in the west and north of the country, the water hardness is usually lower and is usually below 14 dH. A high level of water hardness can lead to limescale deposits in water pipes, water heaters and household appliances. These deposits can affect the efficiency of devices and shorten their lifespan. Hard water can also increase the use of detergents and cleaning products. To avoid these problems, experts recommend using a water softener.
